Volcanic Islands

The Canary Islands are the result of volcanic activity. These seven islands rose from the sea millions of years ago. Fuerteventura was the first to emerge, 20.5 million years ago, while the youngest, El Hierro, rose 800,000 years ago.

Tenerife is the largest of the seven islands by area and features the highest peak, Pico del Teide. At 3,718 meters, it is also Spain's highest mountain. Because the archipelago lies off the coast of Africa, you can go hiking and mountain trekking in pleasant temperatures year-round.

Teide's massive height shapes the island's climate and creates distinct vegetation zones. The landscape changes constantly, shifting from coastal dunes to alpine environments. It is a paradise that offers rewarding hikes at every elevation.
